CrossFit Gardendale Member Spotlight! Chris Finley tells us a little about himself and his CrossFit Gardendale journey. We are so proud of Chris and all of his hard work!
New Orleans, LA
Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m married to my best friend, Melissa, and we have two children, Chris and Hope. I’m a police officer with the city of Homewood. Prior to working there I was a deputy sheriff with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. I’m also a former Marine.
What made you start CrossFit Gardendale?
I was tired of the same old crap that comes with working out in your typical gym setting. I was looking for something different, something that was fun and not mundane. A co-worker had mentioned CrossFit to me at one point a couple of years ago and I decided to finally give it a go because I was tired of being overweight & out of shape.
Describe your first workout?
I don’t remember what the WOD was. It was the 8:15 a.m. class and I was the only guy there. Needless to say, I got my butt kicked!
What are your favorite and least favorite lifts/movements?
Not a huge fan of overhead squats or burpees. I’m game for pretty much anything else!
What goals have you accomplished so far and what goals do you plan to accomplish?
I wanted to get down to 175 pounds. I started close to 230, and I’m within about five pounds of making that weight goal but I’m not stuck on those numbers. I’m down 2 whole pants sizes. My clothes fit better. Aside from that, obviously, I want to be fit. My job requires it. Anybody who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. I still feel like I have a long way to go, but I’m better off then I was a year ago before I started. I’d like to lose a little bit more weight and maybe even compete in a CrossFit competition at some point, but I’m in no rush. I just take it day to day and I’m thankful that the Lord has gotten me where I’m at.
What hobbies or things do you like to do other than CrossFit?
I like water sports like kneeboarding. I also like to target shoot. I used to like hiking but don’t have much time for it these days.
What, if anything, has changed in your life since joining CrossFit Gardendale?
Aside from the obvious physical changes, I feel more motivated. My self-esteem is better now, too. Especially at work, I don’t feel like an overweight slob when I’m in uniform. I’ve started taking pride again in how I look, making sure my uniform is clean, my boots polished, stuff like that. I’m not ready to run around the pool naked or anything during the summer, but we’re getting there!
What advice would you give to any new members?
Stick with it. It’s not meant to be easy. If it were easy it wouldn’t be worth doing in the first place.
