CrossFit Gardendale Member Spotlight! Erika Murphy tells us a little about herself and her CrossFit Gardendale journey. We are so proud of Erika and her dedication and hard work!
Name:
Erika Murphy
Age:
39 Years old
Birthplace:
Mazatlán, México
Tell us a little about yourself:
I was born and raised in México. My parents still live in México along with two of my sisters. I have one sister in the UK. I have been married to my love, Sean Murphy, for almost 12 years. We have a beautiful daughter Sophia who is 10 years old. I work with Hispanic students in the Birmingham City Schools. Watching them grow and learn English gives me great satisfaction.
What made you start CrossFit Gardendale?
I have never worked out in my life, and I was getting out of shape. I did P90X for a little bit, but I needed a change and motivation. (I was not getting enough from myself in my living room). I was really afraid to start CrossFit because I thought I would never be able to keep up with the athletes, but I decided to give it a try anyway.
Describe your first workout?
My first work out was awful!! My only goal that day was to finish the workout without throwing up and passing out in front of everybody, but I was really happy to be able to finish the WOD.
What are your favorite and least favorite lifts/movements?
My favorite movements are power cleans, push press, deadlifts, squats, KB swings, pull-ups, HSPU, box jumps, and sit ups. WOW!! I have too many favorites. My least favorites are wall balls, snatches, and, recently, I discovered that I’m not a fan of running backwards.
What goals have you accomplished so far?
I’m very proud of all my accomplishments like not needing a band to do my pull-ups anymore. (Thank you, Cindi). But one of my biggest ones was being a finalist in March Madness.
What hobbies do you like to do other than CrossFit?
When I am not working out at CrossFit, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family.
What, if anything, has changed in your life since joining CrossFit Gardendale?
I think the biggest change in my life is how my body has toned. I have muscles where I never expected to see them. I feel better and have more energy than I did 20 years ago. Also, I never realized how strong your mind can be. When I’m working out and my body is so tired, my mind keeps pushing me. I never thought I would love working out. I really love CrossFit and the whole community of CFG!!
What advice would you give to new members?
My advice is be persistent. Every day is a chance to be better. Don’t skip days because you are sore. Your soreness is the strength for tomorrow. Keep working hard!!!
I joined a cult, and it’s ok with me!!!!
