Tell us a little about yourself:
I am originally from Pinson & moved to Gardendale 7.5 years ago. I have been married to Wesley for 14 years & we have 3 babies, Hannah Mae, Adeline, & Andrew. I have a Business Management degree (I never used) & then got my RN 11 years ago... but right now I am a stay-at-home mom. We attend Christway Church of God & have been there for 2.5 years now.
It was so hard to find a before picture of myself. I either had my kids strategically placed in front of me, I just wasn't in them, or I deleted the pictures because they were so terrible of me. The "after" photo is really just a progress picture; I am far from done in my journey! What made you start CrossFit Gardendale?
Well, my story is very different from most. This is my second time to start at CFG. Back in February of 2014 I thought, "What the heck, I'm going to try this." I loved it, but to be honest, I was seeing NO results. I did not understand the concept “you can eat around your workouts.” Because I never changed my eating habits, I was stagnant. I saw no change in what I could do & I was frustrated. I had not changed my mindset back then to really WANT to do better, BE better. I thought it would be easy & it would just happen because I walked through the door. I never reached out to the coaches more for help & I gave up. October 28, 2015, I became a QUITTER.
But! I had told myself I wanted to make a change. I had decided to focus on ME. What’s the saying “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy"? I was miserable & realized what I had been doing was benefiting no one. I found an eating plan that was practical for me & my family first & foremost! Then I set a crazy, stupid goal to run a half marathon a year later, The Disney Princess Half Marathon. (Did I mention I was not a runner? Did I mention I was 100 lbs. overweight? Well I was!) I started running, but I wanted to cross train & I KNEW I needed something more than just going to any gym. I talked to Carrie one night when I stopped by & knew I needed CFG. My husband, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, & nephew were all members. My husband had tried to get me to come back several times, but I was embarrassed & honestly not ready. Then seeing some of the member spotlights & posts by others of their progress just pushed me to think about it. On April 1, 2016 (17 months after quitting), I walked back through the door. It was no April Fool’s joke when I walked back in, THIS time I was READY. No shame, no guilt, no condemnation for quitting before. What I got was a hug & "welcome back!" I am so glad I gave this another try.Describe your first workout?

Let's just say I modified the modify. But I felt accomplished walking out of there. I realized I had made a huge step coming back. It was hard then, but I laugh looking back at this WOD because now this is easy! What goals have you accomplished so far?
I do not like to brag on myself, AT ALL! I want to encourage others with this & let them see what you can do if you really put forth the effort!
On February 26th, I ran my half marathon, Disney Princess Half Marathon. That crazy, stupid goal I had set a year before...I DID IT!!!
I feel so much better! My body feels better in my clothes & I don't hate looking in the mirror (dropping 51 lbs. hasn't hurt my feelings either!) Sticking with my eating plan & not letting a cheat meal become a cheat day or week.
I competed in my first CrossFit competition, Feb 18th with my sister in law Kim. We had so much fun!
Since it's my favorite...125 lb. power clean. I chased that for so long, I don't know who was happier, me or Chad, that I FINALLY got it! Now I'm working toward a new PR!What goals do you plan to accomplish?
I want to continue running & do some other crossfit competitions. I want to be able to do pull ups, double unders, & get under 4 minutes on my 1000m row (I am close, at 4:02).
I would say I want to lose X number of pounds, but I am trying not to focus on the number on the scale. I just want to continue to feel good about my body & wear smaller sizes in my clothing. What hobbies or things do you like to do other than CrossFit?
I love to sew, build furniture, spend time with my family, & read. What, if anything, has changed in your life since joining CrossFit Gardendale?
I've come out of my shell more. I used to slink in, do my workout, & leave just as soon as I was done. Now I come in a little early & stay after. We work on other movements, talk, swap recipes, & encourage each other. I have made so many new friendships through CFG! I feel more confident about what I can do; I know that if I just stick with it, I will see results. I now ask for help when I need it, and I don't give up on myself or quit when it gets hard! What advice would you give to any new members?
Do not think you can work out, change nothing else, and still see results. Do not think there's going to be lose-quick, get-fast results or see major improvements in a short period of time. Just like with anything, it takes time! You don't find out you are pregnant & have a baby the next day or week. It has taken me 9 months to get to where I am, to lose 51 lbs. & to start feeling like a different person. It took me 6 months to go from a 100 lb. to 125 lb. power clean. It took me 9 months to go from a 5:38 to 4:02 on my 1000m row.
What this is is a lifestyle change! You have to make the conscious decision to change & fully commit. I promise, you will not find another gym where the coaches & members will be your biggest cheerleaders. Never be afraid to ask for help; I promise, you will have 20 people there to help if you do. I am still asking questions & getting help to improve on my movements. We have all been where you are & we are all here for you. It’s the only place I’ve found that everyone wants you to succeed! This is truly a community that becomes a family, and I love that it is growing & always improving!
